The purpose of the triangle shape is to distribute the force that is applied and is especially useful when grapping the lungs so that pulmonary tissue is not damaged. During a thoracotomy, for example, this forceps can be used to clamp and isolate each lesion of the lung to remove the segment that is cancerous.
